Goldman & Meta Alumni Disrupt Voice AI: AethexAI’s $3M Pre-Seed Targets Overlooked Markets

Former executives from Goldman Sachs and Meta have launched AethexAI, a startup securing $3 million in pre-seed funding to revolutionize voice AI for the unique demands of African and Middle Eastern markets.

AethexAI, founded last year by Mariama Diallo and Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa, is directly addressing a significant void in the burgeoning voice AI sector. While customer support and service are prime targets for AI automation globally, existing solutions often falter in regions like Africa and the Middle East due to specific linguistic and infrastructural challenges.

Strategic Market Positioning

AethexAI’s approach is fundamentally different from mainstream voice AI providers. Instead of relying on existing orchestration tools, the company developed its own small model and orchestration layer from the ground up.

This proprietary technology is specifically engineered to handle the nuanced local dialects of English, French, and Arabic prevalent in its target markets. This strategic decision directly addresses the critical issue of latency, which has plagued previous attempts to automate calls in the region.

“The latency and jitter that we saw on automated calls in this region were outrageous. If we had become orchestrators, we might have had to use large models that were hosted outside the region, resulting in higher latency. We realized that in order for this to work, we have to use very small models and cut latency at every step,” said CTO Odemuyiwa.

The company is also launching its platform for enterprises, offering APIs and SDKs for developers to integrate its models. This dual strategy allows for direct client engagement and broader developer adoption.

Innovation in Model Development

AethexAI has defied conventional wisdom by focusing on small models, ranging from 300 million to 1.7 billion parameters, which is a fraction of the size of typical large language models (LLMs). This choice is deliberate, prioritizing speed and accuracy for regional operations.

To train these specialized models, the startup leveraged anonymized recordings from a call center partner. They also ingeniously collected additional audio data by shipping hard drives to radio stations across Africa.

A contributor network of university students was established to annotate data and pronounce local names, keeping costs down while ensuring data quality. This meticulous approach has enabled AethexAI to handle over 17,000 calls per day.

Founder Vision and Leadership

The leadership team brings a wealth of experience. CEO Mariama Diallo previously worked at Goldman Sachs and later at YC-backed ModelML, focusing on product and growth. CTO Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa is a Caltech graduate who worked at Meta before attending Stanford Business School.

Their combined expertise is instrumental in navigating both the technical complexities and the business realities of emerging markets. They are dedicated to guiding new clients through the voice AI implementation process, offering onsite demos and workshops.

“We always tell customers that we cannot be everything for everybody right now. We’re small. When we start talking to a company, we ask them to pick one use case that is the most important to them to start [with],” explained Diallo.

The company is currently excelling in use cases such as debt collection, customer activation, and KYC verification. They are actively hiring forward-deployed engineers and forming channel partnerships with telecom providers to ensure robust local service delivery.

Business Implications

The entry of AethexAI, with its region-specific focus and innovative model architecture, poses a significant competitive challenge to established voice AI players. Companies like ElevenLabs, Deepgram, Sierra, and Cognigy, while expanding globally, may find their generalized solutions less effective in the nuanced markets of Africa and the Middle East.

Walter Baddoo, co-founder and managing partner of 4DX Ventures, highlights the fundamental differences, noting that enterprises in these regions process roughly three times the call volume of their Western counterparts. The demand for systems that handle dialects, code-switching, and informal speech patterns, while integrating with existing telephony infrastructure and local price points, creates a formidable barrier to entry for generalized solutions. AethexAI’s targeted strategy positions it to capture a substantial share of this underserved market, potentially forcing larger competitors to re-evaluate their global expansion tactics or risk losing ground in these high-growth regions.
